The New Driver’s Guide To Car Insurance

At Got2Insure, we understand that, as a new driver, you are more than likely already aware that you need car insurance.  Car insurance is a legal requirement that all motorists must abide by. However, you may not be sure why you need car insurance or what the best policy for you is. There are a number of things you need to consider before purchasing a policy and some things that you need to know to ensure you get everything you’re looking for from your car insurance. We’ve put together a new driver’s car insurance buying guide to answer some of the important questions for you and give you an idea of how to choose car insurance that’s right for you.

Why Do I Need Car Insurance?

Car insurance is there to protect you in the event of an accident or claim. As all motorists are required by law to insure their cars, it can seem daunting and you may be wondering why you even need a car insurance policy in the first place. However, car insurance provides financial protection in the event of an accident. Although it is a legal requirement to have, car insurance provides peace of mind in the advent of an accident. As per GOV.uk, ‘There were 119,850 road casualties of all severities in the year ending June 2021.’ You may think it may never happen to you and wonder why you need car insurance, but it is best to be protected in case the worst happens and you need to make a claim. Car insurance can protect you from the financial ramifications of medical costs and any repairs that your vehicle may need.

What To Look For In A Car Insurance Policy

There are a lot of things you need to look for in a car insurance policy. When deciding how to choose car insurance, we recommend you do your research to decide what is appropriate for you. If you don’t quite get covered for everything you may need, you could get into a situation where you have to pay for some things out of pocket. Below are some things you need to look for when purchasing car insurance. To learn more about our policies and other optional extras, click here.

Excess is the amount you’ll end up paying when you have to make a claim. If there is damage to your car, you’ll need to pay this amount upfront for the repairs. There is compulsory excess which is set by your insurance provider and voluntary excess which you can add on top to bring down the cost of your insurance.

Types Of Cover

Third party insurance covers any damage to the other party’s car if you are at fault. This does not cover damage to your own car.

Third-party, fire and theft covers you again if there is any damage to another party’s car and you’re at fault, but also covers you if your car is stolen or damaged in a fire.

Comprehensive cover which protects you against damage to your own car, even if you are at fault. At Got2Insure, all of our car insurance is fully comprehensive as standard.

Breakdown Cover

Breakdown cover is often available as an added extra and there are many different layers to it. There could be a distance limit to where this covers you. If you break down too far away from home, you might not be covered. If you break down on your driveway, you may also not be covered. Always look into whether you already have breakdown cover or whether you need to add it to your policy.

Courtesy Car

A lot of standard insurance policies  provide a courtesy car if yours has to go into the garage. It’s always worth checking with your provider if this is something that is covered, and it could be a helpful added extra if something ever goes wrong with your car. There may also be a time limit for borrowing the courtesy car, which varies from provider to provider.

Black Box

As a new driver, you may be offered a black box policy by some insurers which can bring the price of your policy right down. This little black box is fitted in your car and monitors your driving. If you’re a good driver, this can have a positive impact on the price of your policy.

Don’t Just Choose The Cheapest Option

Although the above guide to car insurance covers a lot of what you may need to consider, there’s still a lot to think about. Don’t just choose the cheapest option as you could find yourself stuck without any assistance when you need it.

What NOT To Do When Applying For Car Insurance

When applying for a car insurance policy, you will be asked a series of questions about your situation and what you’re looking for. The most important thing you can do is not lie, even if you think it might alter your quote for the better. You will be asked questions about the make and age of your vehicle, your driving history and where you live. These questions will cover a range of subjects but help the insurer gain a greater idea of what you’re looking for. Not answering these questions truthfully can invalidate your insurance and means you may not necessarily be covered when you need it.
