If you break down while driving in Europe, the most important thing to do is to make sure you are safe and also avoid causing a risk to other road users. If the worst happens and you break down, follow these easy instructions:

• Pull over safely and park your car, ideally away from moving traffic.
• If you’re at the side of the road, put your hazard warning lights on. If you have broken down in the dark, put your sidelights on as well.
• Depending on your car’s position, it could be safer to get out of the car using the passenger side door (if traffic is passing on the driver’s side).
• Make sure that you and your passengers remain a safe distance away from oncoming traffic, ideally on a bank or behind road barriers.
• Call your European car breakdown insurance provider for assistance. You will need to let them know where you are located and they will explain what happens next.
